It's Probably Past Her Birthday Now ....

But many, many happy returns of the probably previous day to
[personal profile] thisbluespirit , one of the loveliest people I've had the privilege of getting to know online. She's one of the people I wish to one day meet in three-dee life, (I won't say RL, since I consider These Here Intarwebz also RL),if I ever make it to that side of the Atlantic, and if she's up for a Canadian visitor from Chicago. Not only is she kind, and funny, and a tremendously talented fiction writer, she's someone who can draw me into her adventures in family history, her love of James Maxwell (totally understandable) and David Collings (the latter especailly. Oh, my, don't I wish I'd had the chance to meet him, and aren't I sad that he's somewhere chatting with Ruby and Gold and not here, although him being Silver, he can more than hold his own in conversation, but I digress!) ... and of course, Sapphire and Steel, to which I'm now addicted.

I hope that you are in good health, that you are navigating these uncertain times with the aplomb and cheer for which I admire you so much; I hope the weather treats you well, and that you can get out of the house, even if it's just to a garden; I hope I can be online a little more, and can interact with you more. No matter what, I'm so glad I know you - Happy Birthday!

A Few Things I've Thought About Lately

Tangential mentions of our current global medical situation, but with at least 1 and possible 2 giggles. Avoid if you'd like. )

3. I cannot bake cookies without making sure that most of them exit my domicile superfuckingfast. If I don't make that arrangement (with some left for Bob), I will do something vaguely equivalent to going face down in the cookie jar and coming up covered in crumbs. This is not a good look for me.

4. Today we had temperatures in the mid to high 70s (Fahrenheit). We wrestled a couple of our windows open to enjoy fresh air and a cross breeze. We'll have weather that's almost as warm tomorrow, and I am going to enjoy it like whoah.

5. I've managed a few more sentences on my cross-over fic. Having figured out the ultimate reason for the opening dilemma, my next big challenge is determining which characters from which canons get to talk to each other, and how.

6. Finally, here's the late, great Bill Withers doing a live version of "Ain't No Sunshine," complete with violins. I could quite happily listen to this on a loop almost any time, despite the heartbreak implicit in the lyrics (or perhaps because of it). Today it sounded even more lovely to me.

Despatch from Tacoma

I'm dropping in very briefly with a message from
[personal profile] a_phoenixdragon , since I know some folks were wondering how she was doing. Washington state, where she and her family moved a while back, is a COVID-19 hot spot and, like many places around the globe, its economy has done some tanking because of that. I know she and the family have been on my mind and that of a few other people, so I was very happy to get a phone call from her Monday night.

Mandy says she, her husband, and their two boys are doing surprisingly well. They are in good health, and in good spirits. They have not yet secured an apartment, and her husband's job ended when his employer got t-boned by the economic downturn, but Mandy's job is holding strong, since it's some sort of medical equipment-based operation and, as such, deemed necessary to stay open. They are confident of finding him another job, although they know it will be difficult. They are equally confident of finding an apartment

Her boys really love their schools - I'm told one of them said for the first time in years that he enjoyed going to school - so they are truly looking forward to schools reopening. Mandy says that the entire household feels, again for the first time in years, that they have reached a place that feels like home, despite all the challenges they're facing.

She wanted me to tell you that she misses everyone, and thinks of you all often, with great affection and gratitude. Your friendship and support is one of the biggest reasons she's been able to power through without drowning in fear or sadness. She is looking forward to getting back online and catching up with everyone once they've found an apartment and some stable internet (she had been using area libraries, which have had to shut by emergency order.)

It will surprise none of you to know that she sends you all hugs. I am very glad to be the bearer of good news!

One More Delayed Birthday Wish

One of the most talented fanfic and SFF writers I've had the pleasure of meeting online is
[personal profile] canaan , who isn't around here very often, but who celebrated on Jan. 20. She went through far too much medical crap a few years ago; I hope that has moderated or disappeared in the time since I last had the enjoyable experience of communicating with her. May this entire year be good for her and her loved ones, filled with creativity and stability. All the best to you!
kaffy_r: Twelve busses River! (Happy River and Twelve!)
Belated Good Wishes

On Jan. 14
[personal profile] ljgeoff  celebrated a birthday. I have come to know her not only as a gifted writer, but as an amazing force of nature, with a lovely voice, a full-throated laugh, an awesome work ethic and even more awesome open heart, a willingness to be both practical and silly, and a desire to experience and save this world as much as possible. I am so very lucky to know her. May your birthday have been wonderful, may your large and loving family cherish you the way they should throughout the coming year, and may your dreams become ever closer to reality, my dear!

Then on Jan. 15, the remarkable
[personal profile] minnehaha  had a birthday. I'm sending out birthday wishes with lots of love to the entire tag team. May you have another year of productive joy in family, in vocation and avocation, in companionship with loved ones, in challenging yourself and others, and in being a most excellent set of personages. Love from Chicago.

Many Happy Returns of the Day

... to
[personal profile] ginger_rude , someone I'm coming to know and enjoy. I'm happy that we know each other, at least here online, and I enjoy reading her thoughts about shows and books and characters. Sometimes I disagree with what she says, but never because her views aren't worth thinking about. I love that. So here's to discovering more about you, and more from you; here's to a great year for you!

And I don't want to go without wishing a happy birthday to the long-silent [livejournal.com profile] monkey_pants7, whose birthday is today. Wherever you are, former TWoP and Who buddy, I hope you're doing well, enjoying knitting, and very happy. May this year be a good one for you.

Sometimes You Have to Leap

And sometimes the leap can be almost as dangerous as not leaping.
[personal profile] a_phoenixdragon  and her family have had to make the decision to leap, at what is probably the most ridiculously awful time of year to be forced to do so.

At this time of year, we all run the risk of suffering empathy and sympathy burnout, of compassion fatigue. And many folks on my f'list have undoubtedly reached out to help. I hope that, if you can, and haven't had the chance to do so yet, that you check out her GoFundMe

I've had the distinct pleasure of meeting her in person. I know how hard she and her husband work, every day. I know how much they love each other and their kids. I know how hard they are trying to turn their lives around. And I know that the process of doing so is almost always, of necessity, a long and bumpy one.

If you can help, I would be grateful. Help includes signal boosting if your wallet is thin, which a number of y'all have already done, and for which I thank you.

Happy Birthday to Remarkable Twins

I met [livejournal.com profile] mack_the_spoon and her sister [livejournal.com profile] namarie24 a surprising number of years ago, over on Television Without Pity. I shared their love of Doctor Who, I could definitely appreciate their love of The X-Files and a few other television shows, and I liked reading their fiction (and occasionally edited some.)

What really impressed me about these two young women, though, besides my awe of their love for and mastery of linguistics, was their shared sense of faith. Even though I do not share it, I can see how it powers their lives, and does so in a very positive way.

Yesterday (Nov. 24) was their shared birthday.

I wish for both of you a sense of fulfilling mission, with time for your kitties, time to explore all the fascinating aspects of where you call home these days, much friendship and love, connection with your family back in North America, and occasionally some time spent with the fun of fandom. Happy, happy birthday!

So Here It Is, The Weekend

Work situation: I made it through the week, and I ended up knowing who I'm reporting to, at least for now. I was right, it's someone I can work with, and that pleases me. I was able to hand off a particularly unpleasant situation to him, allowing me to potentially maintain or improve a relationship with a difficult union person, someone I need to deal with in future. I also got through a relatively frustrating conference call, and I have things that I can complete this weekend. So hurrah.

Even better, though: I learned that the works of the late John M. Ford, most of which have been out of print for some time, are going to be reissued by Tor. I have only read one of his works, "The Last Hot Time," and I've read it five or six times, possibly more, but this gives me the chance to look forward to reading more. Ford, who died too young in 2006, was known and loved by people I know and respect. He was, by all accounts, a brilliant polymath, equally gifted in poetry and prose, and much much more, and blessed with both mordant wit and rampant silliness - I've long regretted that I never took the time at Minicon to watch his "Ask Doctor Mike" presentations. So yes, better late to the party than not at all. (Oh, and how much do I love "The Last Hot Time"? Enough to want more of that world, enough to wish that, in his tragic absence, there was someone to write good fanfic in the world, enough that I'm glad that no one has attempted it.)

And finally, in the Yes, I'm Too Obsessive department; am I completely delusional in seeing a particular Crack at around 32 seconds into this delightful fanvid by
[personal profile] such_heights ?

Now, off to clean my teeth and build a Big Ass Martini with which to enjoy far too much anime.

One Day Late

I hope it's not too late to wish a delayed Happy Birthday to
[personal profile] kerravonsen - a talented* fan whose stories, thoughts and conversation I h ave valued ever since meeting her in Who fandom lo, these many years (!) ago. She is a dedicated believer in unions and fairness, in political justice and in mercy. Equally important, she knows how to laugh and take joy in the lighter things in life.

She is a person of faith, and over the years we've discovered that although our beliefs differ, sometimes widely, we can put aside those differences and enjoy each other's company. In this polarized world, that is a rare gift. So I hope yesterday's birthday, coming as it does on a solemn day, also had some light and beauty in it.

*Not only does she write, she creates beautifully dynamic art, about which I can enthuse unhesitatingly . Take a look
kaffy_r: Japanese building w/flowers on blue ground (Blue Nippon)
Many Happy Returns of the Day ...

... to [livejournal.com profile] cathica, one of whose major talents is writing stories that stick with the reader long after the page is turned. Since she excels at writing horror, that is a dangerous gift, at least for her readers - and yet well worth the shivers. She also writes beautiful stories, full of emotion and observational wisdom, many of them Whoniversal fic, in which field I first discovered her. Her secondary talent lies in the inspiration she provides me, to be a better writer. In fact, I kept at "Hearts and Moons" for more than a decade because I wanted to honor a long-past prompt from her. She is also funny, thoughtful, and a definite pleasure to know. And since she and I share some geography, I swear that I shall some day have tea with her.
Happy Birthday - may the day be good, and free of bears!

Oh, and she has the most beautiful handwriting I've seen in decades, and possibly my entire life.

He's not been seen around here for some time and, even though we live in the same city, we've not connected with him lately in 3D life. I wish that were not the case. He is eminently worth knowing. Catching Up With Good People

Many happy returns of the past day (Oct. 24) to the long-vanished
[personal profile] lolmac , who was a bright and cheery presence online, whether through her responses to my posts, or through her witty and creative lolmac meme generations (Richard Dean Anderson FTW, whether that was in MacGuyver or Stargate). I hope she had a great birthday. and that we'll someday see her again around here.

Another Oct. 24 birthday;
[personal profile] cosmiccoz , who has long since departed these stomping grounds for other platforms. I miss them, and think of them with affection. I hope they had a good birthday, and that their life has provided joy and creativity since last we connected.

And finally, reaching back all the way to Oct. 18, I offer not just birthday wishes, but a wish for the entire coming year, to
[personal profile] owlboy , who celebrated back on Oct. 18. If you're looking for incisive meta, wonderfully sideways humor, for someone who doesn't suffer fools gladly, but who could outdo Francis of Assisi when it comes to the care and gentle love for all creatures big and small, whose artistic and writing abilities are happily remarkable - someone who is, in short, an epic person to know - look no further than this remarkable individual. I'm definitely glad to know them, and I hope that Oct. 18 was good for you. May the coming year also be wonderful

To A Mistress of Meta

Many happy returns of the almost completed day to
[personal profile] elisi . I think I've said on many occasions how much I respect her fannish writing abilities, whether those are her fics - which are emotionally mature and rich with imagery - and her meticulous, observant, and sometimes breathtakingly daring metas.

All of that bears repeating, though. I believe that when we in fandom talk about how our world can seamlessly blend geeky passion with intellectual rigor,
[personal profile] elisi 's the kind of writer to which we refer.  There may be times I disagree with her, and those few and far between, but I have never ever regretted reading anything she's written. Nor have I regretted engaging with her, and being inspired by her to be a better writer, a better observer, a more careful thinker.

Outside of fandom, it's clear that she is simply a lovely person, and I feel very lucky to have made her acquaintance. So here's hoping you had a particularly good birthday with your family and friends, and may the rest of the year be equally fantastic.

Birthday Wishes from the (Temporarily) Halt and (Not Really all That) Lame

There are so many people whose birthdays I've missed recently that I am in hearty disapproval of myself. I intend to catch up on many of them, because so many of you are such lovely people - so damned interesting, kind, creative, and memorable. I am privileged to know all of you.

Today, I want to wish the happiest of birthdays to two delightful members of my f'list:
[personal profile] a_phoenixdragon , and [personal profile] editrx , both of whom I met through our shared love of  the Whoniverse. Please forgive my late wishes today. (At least today, I can plead technical cast-related difficulties, rather than my usual tardiness.)

[personal profile] a_phoenixdragon  radiates not only all those aforementioned qualities, her dedication to family, sense of humor, love of democracy and natural affection towards friends across the globe just blazes through what she writes, whether that's posting about her life, responding with thoughtful comments and hugs to others' posts, or writing memorably strong and poetic fic. Her writerly vision.can be dark, but it can also be filled with the brightest glimpses of hope, and rich with a sophisticated understanding of the human heart.  I've had the pleasure of meeting her in person, and of having lively phone and Google hangout conversations. I consider myself lucky to have met her, and I hope today provided some joy, some well-deserved love from the family that you care for so well. And cake. You need to have cake! All my love, my dear!

I have had the privilege of benefiting from one of the skills that
[personal profile] editrx  has in spades, one amply noted by her online name. She is careful and helpful, with suggestions and questions that certainly made the writing she was able to review for much better than it had been before she reviewed it. She also approaches life with as much humor and determination as possible. She hasn't been around much lately, and I know things have been difficult for her, to put it mildly. I hope that her birthday marks a time free of stress and pain, and full of as much joy as possible.

Passed, and Almost Over

Many happy returns of the day to friends I'm lucky to know. (And even those whose birthdays have passed - well, consider this my wish that the days after your actual birthday were just as good, or even better.)

To
[personal profile] rmjwell , an aficionado of bodies, dance, photography and incisive thoughts and comments, many happy returns of Oct. 4 - may it have been an excellent day, with family and friends around you. It was a joy to get to know you all those years ago when you were a Midwesterner, and I still look forward to the day when you're able to come east from the Left Coast to visit.

To
[personal profile] supergee , who was the very first person to suggest to me, via his own activity, that one could enjoy a lively social and mental life via online journaling, a very happy birthday today (at least there are still a few hours in Oct. 6.) You were always a master of both brevity and, when necessary, extended essaying. I valued that as far back as the old rasff days on Usenet of blessed memory. I tried to learn from your example, and occasionally I do well at it. Many happy returns of the day.

And finally, to
[personal profile] heatherbelles , who is now well on her way to Oct. 7 - I'm told that your Oct. 6 was very good, filled with family, as well as an excellent curry. Huzzah! Although our communication is much less regular than when TWoP was a thing, I'm so glad that I came to know you there. I learned about history, how to look at history, and how to help other people look at it, thanks to you. And of course, we shared a love of Dr. Who that I think we still share. I am glad to have met you, and hope that we continue to stay in touch in some fashion.

Reportorial and Fannish Quality

[personal profile] strannik01  had both in abundance, and I'm glad to have made his acquaintance. He's still on active Fourth Estate duty, serving democracy by letting the readers in his communities know what is going on to, around, and for them. He does his work carefully, checks facts, then write stories that are clear and filled with information.

I actually met him online via his fannish interests, then discovered to my delight that his stomping grounds were relatively close to mine. We've had the chance to have coffee at least once, and I hope we can set another date to chat. He's witty and observant (qualities necessary to both journalism and fandom), and his knowledge of politics and culture east of Poland and the Baltic states will surely prove illuminating these days.

I hope your birthday finds you with friends or family, or both, and that the day proceeds happily despite it being all too wet in our neck of the woods. Happy, happy birthday!

Birthdays at the Year's Halfway Point

It's June! It's the middle of June! Here in Chicago, warm weather can't gain any purchase (today is cloudy, windy, and hovering only in the low 50s Fahrenheit). To keep myself warm and to celebrate people I know and like, here are some birthdays and birthday wishes. I never seem to be on time, but the wishes are sincere.

[personal profile] acciochocolate , she of costuming know-how, icon creation, and perfumery love, celebrated on June 8. She's thoughtful, fannish, a Whovian who shares my love of that Whoniverse, and I am glad I met her on these here intarwebz. Many delayed happy returns of the day!

[personal profile] earlgreytea68  also celebrated on June 8. She's an author of both original fiction and excellent fanfic; an attorney with insights into how law can intersect with music, with fandom, and more, a teacher, and an adventurer who has been unafraid to pull up stakes and travel to new surroundings. Happy birthday!

[personal profile] livii , who is no longer around these parts as far as I know, had a June 9 birthday. When I first fell into Who fandom, especially the fanfic part of it, she was someone whose work I aspired to emulate in quality, and whose comments and critiques I was glad to receive. She comes from My Home and Native Land, is a dedicated mother, a thoughtful progressive, and I hope someday to interact with her again.

[personal profile] time_converges  had a birthday on June 11. She, like too many people, isn't around much these days, but she is someone of whom I am fond; we share fannish affection for the Whoniverse (especially Donna Noble), for BSG, for fic writing and reading, and much more. Felicitations on your natal anniversary - I hope it was a good one!

And finally, today - this very day -
[personal profile] eaweek  celebrated. Happy Birthday! She loves fandom, from the Whoniverse in general to specific things like costuming (which is very cool), she's a figure-skating aficionado, she is organized, doesn't suffer fools gladly, and in general is a wonderful person to know. Once again - Happy Birthday!!

Happy, (Delayed) Happy, Joy (Really Delayed) Joy

I appear to have come down with a rich, bubbling cold - go, me - but that shouldn't stop me from delivering some much-delayed (as the headline says) birthday wishes.

On May 3,
[personal profile] sunnytyler001  had a birthday. I hope she sees this; I know she has had a pretty tough couple of years, and she deserves a much better year now. All the best wishes to you, and hopes for good days to come.

On May 5, that erudite Liverpudlian
[personal profile] jjpor  celebrated. He's a treasure for Who fandom, not only for his excellent fiction, but for his cheerful efforts on behalf of the fandom's online communities. I am so pleased that I've gotten to know him online. I hope your birthday was an excellent one, and that your year has continued in that fashion.

Happy May 9 birthday to
[personal profile] calapine , who likes Twelve, Eleven, Four and Romana II, Moffat and Missy, all of which I heartily endorse. Also, she likes Sapphire & Steel and Battlestar Galactica and many other things of which I approve. I hope the day in question was excellent for her.

It's been some time since
[personal profile] deathpixie  posted, but I hope her birthday, on May 9, was good. I don't know if she's still in My Home and Native Land, or if she's returned to her Antipodean home; wherever she is, I hope she is doing well.

Two days ago, on May 14, the inestimable
[personal profile] thisbluespirit  celebrated a birthday. I can't adequately say how much her humor, gentle and wry, has made me smile over the years, or how much her fiction, sophisticated and memorable, has enriched my reading life, although she has probably had the same effect on many other folks. (Oh, and hey - S&S!) May your summer be manageable, may your genealogical and historic. explorations be surprising and fun. and may you continue to brighten the electronic page for some time to come!

And this very day,
[personal profile] akirlu  celebrated. She doesn't come around much, so I wished her a happy birthday on another platform, and I hope she had one. She is well worth knowing, and although it's been some time since we communicated, I appreciate her.

Many Happy Returns of the Delayed Days

I haven't been paying attention to all the lovely folks who've celebrated birthdays this month, and since this is the final day of March, I thought I'd send out some belated good wishes.

First, to
[personal profile] robling_t , she of cat-herding, the creator and writer of a most interesting couple. and a person who exudes generalized sardonic amusement at the state of the world. She celebrated on March 26, and I hope she celebrated well. And since we are in the same general area, I hope someday to have her over for tea.

Next,
[personal profile] sensiblecat  celebrated on March 28. She enjoys fandom., the Doctor, fannish music. cats, and life with family and friends. I enjoy seeing her comments when she posts, and I am very glad to have made her acquaintance via LJ. Here's hoping you were able to take time to take walks in her beloved South West.

Then, today,
[personal profile] merryghoul  had a birthday - many I hope it was wonderful for her. She is a fan, and does yeoman's work via who_daily for those of us who are Whovians. She's a fic writer who shares my love of the incomparable River Song, and I hope to continue reading her fics well into the future.

Finally, tomorrow,
[personal profile] sarah531  will blow out the birthday candles. She writes beautifully, is thoughtful and funny, and I should spend more time interacting with her in These Here Intarwebz. Regardless, have a wonderful day, with family and friends!

Happy Birthday Y'all

I was doing so well with posting this months, and even sending out birthday wishes relatively close to, or even on, actual birthdays. And then I fell off the damned bicycle (not a horse. Horses and I don't get along.) So here we are again, with me sending out belated wishes to absolutely delightful people.

The very first is to one of the first people with whom I bonded in online fandom, [livejournal.com profile] lyricalviolet, who celebrated on Feb. 18. I met her on the Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica boards at Television Without Pity, and I quickly grew to love her intelligence and adventurous nature, her creative skills and sense of humor, and of course, our shared fandom passions. Over the years, I regret to say, I have failed to keep up with her as she met the man she loves, married, had a wonderful child, and in general took the Doctor's advice and had a great life. I doubt she'll see this, and I'll look elsewhere to send her felicitations, but I want all of you to know what an amazing person she is.

Another birthday person is the redoubtable [livejournal.com profile] wendymr,  the first person to prove to me that fanfic could be well-written, gripping, emotionally trenchant and altogether satisfying. She is an ex-pat living in My Home and Native Land, she's a fan of labor rights and democracy, she knits, and I'm hoping she'll let us know how her trip to Australia went this past year. I promise I won't mention eggnog in her presence ... She celebrated on Feb. 18 as well, and I hope her celebrations were all that she hoped they would be.

The third Feb. 18 birthday belongs to
[personal profile] marence , a Cleveland denizen whose love of art, fandom, and rock and roll are praiseworthy, to say the least. I recall with pleasure a visit she made several years ago to Chicago, when we were able to share coffee and stories downtown (and watch a political protest go by.) I doubt that she is around here much these days, but if she does see this - Happy Birthday, and I hope you come to Chicago again, soon!

Finally, on Feb. 21,
[personal profile] misscam  celebrated, and I hope this extremely talented Norwegian fan enjoyed her day. If you see this, Happy Birthday!

So Many Winter Birthdays

A delayed Happy Birthday wish to
[personal profile] dewline , a fellow Canadian, someone who lives in my birth city, and also someone whose birthday was January 30. He posts thoughtfully about social and political issues in The True North and elsewhere, and is also a dab hand at providing links to interesting things. I hope your natal celebration was all you wanted it to be.

And hurrah, I can wish two folks some birthday happiness on the right day:

[personal profile] amberfocus , a prolific and gifted fic-writer, shares my love of the Ninth Doctor, Rose, and Jack Harkness, and she writes them well. She's a disciplined creator of words, which is even more impressive when you consider that she's also a major gardener who takes care of her family with devotion. Happy Birthday!

Finally, the great giraffe-opponent
[personal profile] pitry , whose opposition to those long-necked deer doesn't make her a bad person. She's a fearless member of Academia, a lover of Torchwood (hurrah!), and has been a fellow Dr. Who fan for quite some time. I always enjoy seeing her posts, as infrequent as they currently are. I hope today was a great day for you!

Today is Friday, and it's also a birthday+ one for two folks I know.

First - many happy returns of the day (+one) to
[personal profile] scripsi , a kind and talented woman who has costume-and-coutierer-fu. She shares many of my fandom loves and has a fine grasp of how to turn darkness into a bit of hopefulness in her very good fics, she cares about her world. her family, and those around her. I am very glad I've gotten to meet her, and I look forward to learning to know her more in the future. May your 2019 be fine, free of health problems for you and those you love. full of proximity to those loved ones, and full of unexpected joy.

Second - another set of happy returns for
[personal profile] harvey_rrit . Of all the people I've met on LJ/Dreamwidth, I suspect he and I are the farthest apart on political and possibly social stances. Yet he has continued to refrain from unfriending me. More importantly, he has continued to be an intelligent, funny, and observant person, who reminds me that the world isn't black and white, and doesn't necessarily have to be divided up into war camps.
I sincerely hope your 2019 is a good one, and that I see you around again soon!
