Just a few things before I plunge into the week; it's been a tad crazy at Casakaffyr - that unique brand of alternately buzzy and lethargic crazy that results in no damn thing done at all, despite lurching and intermittent attempts to build up enough thrust to exit the gravity well of blank and absent inertness.
Things I've not done, that I should:
Just a few things before I plunge into the week; it's been a tad crazy at Casakaffyr - that unique brand of alternately buzzy and lethargic crazy that results in no damn thing done at all, despite lurching and intermittent attempts to build up enough thrust to exit the gravity well of blank and absent inertness.
Things I've not done, that I should:
- Work on editing/beta'ing two pieces of fiction by excellent writers who deserve better of me. I've pulled up their material on my computer several times, looked at them, read them over, and ... my brain stops working. This will stop this week, I promise. (And I'm hoping that a public declaration of same will provide the last tonne or so of fuel to build thrust to a successful point.)
- Begun writing
zenitt 's second Help_Haiti story. He and I have spoken of it, and I have a beginning in my head. I promise the beginning will have subsequencies sometime this week. (Yes, it's a word. Because I said so, that's why.) This is said with an eye to the same end as previously mentioned.
- Vacuumed. The less said about that (looks around, shudders) the better.
- Been more social. I missed a concert last night that I'd promised to attend, and I must make my belated apologies to the lovely oboist who helped organize it as a Haiti fundraiser. I've tended not even to talk to people.
- Written up my first Caprica appreciation. I have much of it put together in my head, some of it put together in an actual file - and, of course, none of those pieces knitted, woven, glued or even stapled together in some form that is worthwhile or even appreciably readable.
- First Born got mugged last Friday, and his newly purchased iPod, first fruits of his job, was taken from him. He wasn't physically hurt much, although his two attackers did push him to the ground and kick him before the whole thing ended. And, while they took his bag, they didn't get his wallet, which he keeps separately, so his cards and ID weren't stolen. But he was attacked, and that's ... indescribable. He's still in shock, and I'm amazed he's held up as well as he has. I didn't think I was bothered until he left for something Saturday night, and I suddenly came close to panicking.
- Gone to see some gorgeous orchids, at Hausermann's vast (and I do mean VAST) greenhouse acreage in Villa Park, Illinois. This family has an incredible business, cultivating bazillions of types of orchids, or so it seemed to me when
apostle_of_eris took
dr_whuh and your humble scribe out there last month. The smell of the place - from often heart-stoppingly lovely aromas of the flowers to the musty wet earth in which they sat - and the look of the flowers themselves, from the tiny ones the lads like to the lush explosions of color that drew me, provided a treat to the senses and a balm to the soul. (And I found myself glamoured not by the gorgeous purple flowers that I adored, but by orchids the color of polished wood, all sand and brown and gold streaks - they shouldn't have been beautiful to me, in terms of what I normally like in flowers, but they were.) Unfortunately, I don't think I have good pictures of them; we could only take a few shots because my batteries died. Still, here's one.
- Attended a Coffee Party on National Coffee Party Day. I don't normally go out for things of this sort because a) I'm not a citizen yet and b) helloooo, reporter? Not supposed to show partisanship?? This nascent movement, however, appears, despite the progressive tilt of its founder, to be a determinedly nonpartisan attempt to reintroduce civility into the process of making government work. There were Republicans, Democrats and independents at the meeting I attended, and everyone wanted to listen to everyone else. Politeness between people as they work at making our democracy work, for us. What a concept. I may eventually have a picture or two of the get together I attended later, if I didn't get my thumb on the lens. I'm not sure where this movement will go, or whether I'll attend further meetings; if I do, it may well be simply as an observer. However, attending made me feel better about the state of democracy. You in the back can snicker. I don't mind. Doesn't change my mind, either.
